clean up my town

On my last paddle I bought back a shopping bag (which I found in the river) full of fishing line (which I untangled from trees in the river) and fishing hooks. How hard is it, people? Take it home with you!! If I fall out one day whilst untangling fishing line and manage to skewer myself on a hook I am going to be REALLY MAD!! ;)

I found a big beer box abandoned during my early morning paddle today and filled it to overflowing with coke cans, beer bottles, plastic bags and fishing line. (I see now why some kayakers carry pocket knives – breaking fishing line off trees with my bare hands sucks!!!)I couldn’t stay mad for long though, because I also got up close and personal with a feeding pelican and paddled through a school of tiny fish that jumped out of the water all around the kayak. Silvery splishy magic!

I kayak, I make a mental note to return with a rubbish bag…

Also, I predict that I will eventually fall out of the kayak attempting to pick up rubbish in the river. Right now I’m exasperated by rubbish but THEN I will be mad about rubbish! Downright grumpy I tell you!

The ‘be a bicycle tourist in my own town’ goal was inevitably going to end with me and a hessian sack doing rubbish duty to get rid of litter. sigh
