Looking more like something one would expect to find in Los Angeles this bit of Freeway Art was spotted on Broad Street in Clifton NJ where the roadway passes under an ramp connecting the Garden State Parkway to Route 3. Simple stencils were used to create the umbrellas and raindrops – adding a bit of whimsy to an otherwise mundane piece of infrastucture.

Virtually unimaginable when it was built in 1931, and still just as breathtaking.

Newark NJ is a gem, and the more I wander the streets of the Brick City, the more I fall in love with her.
In Washington Park I discovered a portrait of George Washington portrayed as he makes his farewell address to the troops at Rocky Hill near Princeton, New Jersey. Having just dismounted from his horse, he stands on the horse’s left side, the horse’s reins in his right hand which rests against the horse’s saddle. His left hand rests on his proper left hip. The horse stands quietly with its front right hoof raised and its head lowered. The sculpture is installed on a low rectangular base that rests atop a foliage covered mound. The mound is surrounded by a low iron fence.

The Great Falls Raceway and Power System is a recognized historic site. The raceways are a series of canals built above the Great Falls of Paterson that would divert water toward industrial facilities, primarily mills, that we located away from the river. Falling water would great a clean power source to grow Paterson into a major industrial center.

More of a rapids than a falls, the little falls, located in Little Falls NJ, once powered several mills alongside the river. Some of those mills have been converted in condominiums with HUGE ceilings.

The Great Falls of the Passaic River is a National Historic Park surrounding a prominent waterfall on the Passaic River in Paterson. The Great Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in the United States. It played a significant role in the early industrial development of New Jersey starting in the earliest days of the nation.
On March 30, 2009, President Obama signed legislation designating the falls as Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park, which provides additional federal protections for the 77-foot waterfall
One of the funs things about this photo is that I was playing around with the settings and such. Doesn’t the photograph look a little like one of those early 20th Century hand coloured post cards?

You see a brick building standing on a street corner on Paterson New Jersey.
I see Possibility.
You see missing windows.
I see rooms of a design studio filled with natural light.
You see 19th Century architecture.
I see the home of a 21st Century light industrial company.
Possibility to success is all around us, sometimes we just need to rethink how we look at things.

Built in 1899, the Passaic County Administration Building in Paterson New Jersey was completed while the city was still a thriving industrial center. The building’s style is akin to those found along the canals in Amsterdam and reflects the Dutch heritage of many of the original settlers of the area.
