Taken Ill 2 years ago

A few weeks ago I referred to myself as having “taken ill” – is this British English or just proper (and possibly archaic) language ?

Jacket Potatoes 3 years ago

After learning the term Jacket Potato yesterday (it’s a baked potato) I decided to make one. A little bit of ham, a little broccoli, and some fontina cheese (no, this was far from Kosher) and voila – a well dressed Jacket Potato.

Fortnight 3 years ago

I used fortnight today. I didn’t even realize I used the word until someone else pointed it out to me!

Sorting out my vocabulary 3 years ago

I find myself using the phrase “sort out” quite a bit lately.

Sort out my finances

Sort out the new inventory system

Dust ! 3 years ago

Yes, I was thinking of Margery Dawson of Fat Fighters when I realized that I have not used a trash can in ages – I use a dust bin.

Margery also reminded me that I can have as much dust as I like – because it has no fat. (Watch “Little Britain” on BBC America to learn more about Margery and Fat Fighters)

Toilet 3 years ago

Americans go to the bathroom. Ironically most of the time the room to which they are going does not have a bath, sometimes not even a shower if its a public restroom. And what’s up with “restroom” – I would not take a nap in there – no further comment needed there.

And why do guys call it a bathroom. Girls take baths. We shower.

I’ve been using the term “toilet” instead of bathroom. Even called it an en suite a few times!

A great way to listen to proper British English is to tune into the British World Service at www.bbc.co.uk

Accent ? Or What ? 3 years ago

In order to accomplish this goal, do we just have to use proper English, phrases, and diction, or do we have to pony up and do the full blown accent as well? I sound a bit Cornish when I do that. Oh the dilema.

Colour My Words 3 years ago

“and Bob’s your uncle”

“too right you are”

“across the car park”

“I have to post this letter”

The words and phrases are becoming a part of my vocabulary.

Smashing !

naked ? 3 years ago

Why on earth is the first picture for this goal some half naked bloke standing in an ensuite ?
