When I was a wee lass (about 6 or so) my family had a work-horse, Bride :) My Dad used to hitch her up and we would go into the woods to return with a sled full of firewood , and often Dad would lead me around our yard on Bride’s back !
I remember my Mom and I taking great pride in making tassles for her harness in the winter ( to pretty her up ), and I used to feed her thick homemade bread smothered in molasses-right out of my hand !
Just yesterday, I saw some cows and horses in a field, and suddenly I wanted to go for a ride again….after about 45 years !! :)
