finish writing my book

Well it’s been a long time since I’ve made an entry on this. I gave up on the last book I was writing; I just wasn’t happy with how it was turning out, and feel I should wait until I’m a more experienced writer before I try to tackle it. However, I started another novel in October, and have done around 30’000 words so far. This one is about my journey around Europe that I did in 2005, only I’m exaggerating a lot of the descriptions to a point where Parisian McDonalds have frogs’ legs in their Big Macs instead of gherkins, and all the buildings in Pisa lean, etc. It’s become a rather surreal piece of travel writing, but I feel it’s coming along better than the last book I was writing!

I’ve been writing since August, and I’m about halfway through the first draft (around 70’000 words so far). It’s not anywhere near as much as I OUGHT to have done, but at least it’s something. It’s also very sketchy and poorly written for the most part, but that’s what first drafts are for. It’s going to be a while before it’s done, but I’m glad that I still feel passionate about it. I’ve started so many stories in the past and hardly ever finish them because I lose the motivation. This time though, I really want to get through it to the end.

Well I’ve been stuck for so long but I think finally I’m starting to emerge from my cave and the words are falling onto the page fairly well. They’re not exactly flowing out of me as nicely as I’d like, but it’s better than nothing, right? I think as soon as I get my character to the real meat of the story, and start introducing the other characters (who I’ve still yet to really figure out), I should start feeling a bit more passionate about it again.

Well I’ve actually only just started, done about 4’000 words. I have a long way to go. I’ve had writer’s block for a while, but I think I’m getting over it. I just have to sit down for an hour and force myself to do nothing else but write. The hardest part is just bringing up the will power to get down and do it. Once you start the engine though, it’s not too hard to keep moving.
