Wings (1927) 17 months ago

I found the original Best Picture winner, a silent film, to be fairly unwatchable for a modern audience. I can appreciate the Chaplin silents, but running over 2hrs, this was way too long for a silent film.

In the Heat of the Night (1967) 23 months ago

Having seen a handful too many disappointing Best Picture winners, I was more than impressed by In the Heat of the Night. A story of racism, police work, south vs north, and damn fine acting (despite some cliched characters which may still be realistic), this is a movie that holds up 40 years later. That’s impressive.

Oliver! (1968) 2 years ago

Well, I like songs about selling children and songs about food…and that kid who played the Artful Dodger was great, but otherwise this was 2 hours too long.

The Sting (1973) 2 years ago

Excellent, excellent, excellent. I love the construction of this movie with the title cards and mini chapters and the old time piano music. Great performances all around. A real winner, here!

Lawrence of Arabia (1962) 2 years ago

Big. Long. Epic.

Well done, but I had trouble following exactly what was going on.

Cimarron (1931) 2 years ago

Aaaaaaand I stopped paying attention half way through. This was not my kind of western.

All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) 2 years ago

A brutal look at the first world war. There was more humor here than I expected and the battle sequences were better produced than I expected for a film of this era, but I would still recommend the book over the movie.

The Departed 2 years ago

The only Best Picture nominee I have seen so far just happens to win…which makes my list easier because I do not have to add one to complete it.

Good movie, but not the “best” picture of the year. No matter. Good for Marty and I’m glad this won rather than The Aviator a few years back.

Cavalcade (1933) 2 years ago

I gave it the old college try, but the horrible overacting in the first fifteen minutes turned me off right away and I had to shut it off.

I think it’s supposed to be a comedy, but I’m not sure.

Terms 2 years ago

I think Terms of Endearment (1983) is designed to make everyone cry like a girl, regardless of gender. But then again, the hint of the death of a sympathetic character gets me.
