Okay, so, if I said it was better than Lisey’s Story I’m not really complimenting Duma Key.
But, it is. It’s much better than Lisey’s Story.
Duma Key is still over-written and sprawling. A decent novel, far from one of King’s best. It’s missing so much of the interest of Cell, and doesn’t scratch the surface of King’s best.
The painting thing – interesting tie to the supernatural and building suspense and curiosity.
It’s just hundreds of pages too long for its own good. King’s style, sure. But damn.

King’s stories are always good and except perhaps Cell, this is far better than any of his recent novels.

Well…250 pages of The Talisman was about a hundred too much. I know this is a fan favorite and I have a friend who very much loves it, but this was some dull crap…and I still had 400 pages to go. Ugh.
Quit!
Which also means that Black House is just out. That same friend who loves The Talisman hated Black House, so maybe it is for the best.

Pet Sematary

I have horrifying memories of watching the movie as a kid, mostly of the sister Zelda (which is barely a plot point), and those sequences don’t have the same terror, but overall Pet Sematary is one King’s scarier novels because you know what’s coming, you just don’t know when. Nasty stuff here.

Twas good. Barely supernatural but scary as the weight kept dropping off.

After reading a couple of King’s stinkers, Christine was a pleasant surprise. Good tension, well drawn characters, an outstanding description of what it feels like when a guy is grabbed by the balls (literally), and a satisfying book.
Well done, Mr. King!

Finally! It’s been a while since I’ve read a King novel which I haven’t been disappointed by, but this was really, really good.

The first Stephen King novel (of the 18 or so I’ve read) which I was not able to finish. This was baaaaad. I even finished Blaze, and that one sucked, too.

Short, but pleasant enough, the novel reads like what it is – two older men telling a story about a mystery to a young twenty something. As such, pleasant enough, but definitely minor King.
