I can’t do much with it, being rented and it consisting of a new patio laid over an old patio! However, we scavenged some old wooden draws from a skip which will make nice little beds for tom’s and peppers. Tonight I made a compost bin out of an old dustbin. I have also started a herb garden in the one bed we actually have. Hopefully the seedlings will start doing something in the next week too! To reward me for my hard work we actually saw the first drop of rain we have had after weeks of baking hot weather.

The waiting list for allotments around here is shocking, I am currently about 150th for an allotment that is ‘undersubscribed’ over 3 miles away. In the neglected communal entrance yard there is no room for a compost bin, and most of it is concreted over and colonised by ivy and sycamores. Perhaps tomorrow I will clear a little patch and plant something. It is disheartening though to see and entire avenue taken up by pavement, tarmac and cars. I would much prefer to have a road with bus access only; and the 3 lane equivalent area taken up with grass and kids playgrounds and community veg patches. One day…
Cannot recommend this book enough. Hugely comprehensive and inspiring; it narks me that I can’t do ait all fast enough!
