find collaborators

Kevin’s my collaborator. He’s a good collaborator. He has motivation, optimism, and people skills. He’s funny and fun. If only either of us had any time to do anything…

So when our development anatomy course ended, Dr. Kumar gave out informal evals for us to fill out, and one thing he asked was whether we think he should publish his notes as a textbook, since there are no veterinary devo textbooks. And I wrote, “yes! Absolutely! I’ll help with the pictures!” Naturally Kumar doesn’t read his evals.

So I brought it up again in lab one day, early this semester. I said, I’ll help you with the pictures! And he said, REALly? And then someone asked something about neck muscles in the goat.

So I brought it up AGAIN today, during my selective, when he was picking at my ferret dissection. I said, is that devo text still in the works? And he said, NO, unless I can find him a publisher, because textbooks don’t really make money and to get something published you need something that can go on Oprah. Kumar is funny. So I said, well if you ever DO, I WANT TO HELP WITH THE PICTURES.

Me: Well what about a textbook for undergraduate biology? Lots of undergrads take embryology.
Dr. K: That is true. Embryology.
Me: That’s what I wanted to do, before I wanted to be a vet, was draw pictures for biology textbooks.
Dr. K: REALly? Are you good at art?
Me: Welllummm that depends who you ask I guess.
Dr. K: do you think you are good at art?
Me: Yeah, I think so. I’m good with photoshop.
Dr. K: REALly? You should send me some of your work. Can you send me some pictures?
Me: Sure!
Dr. K: We will put together a book. I don’t care about the money.

And then I realized I have no good pictures. Because I’m not a good artist. And I haven’t drawn anything since the semester started except a one-inch pen sketch of someone’s eye. And I suck. Oh this is awful. Why didn’t I get a degree in graphic design? Help me, self esteem!
