I’m in college, and down here I don’t have much stuff. But up the hill, I have boxes and cabinets and shelves of things I don’t need, but keep anyway. Old schoolwork, old books, old video games. Old relics of all sorts of existences. Emptiness can be accessed directly by trying to shed all those material attachments. I don’t want total materiallessness, but I hate having all that accumlated stuff that doesn’t do anything but sit around.

We fill ourselves every moment with so many crazy things. Thoughts, interactions, food, movements, desires, emotions. I don’t want emptiness to be a rejection of all these things, but an awareness of it. Only through purging do we have room for newness, for growth. Fields must be cleared before the next harvest. Does the mind work in a similar way?
