Night One

So last night was night one of no tv. I shut it off and almost felt paralyzed. However would I spend my time? I ended up doing some fill-in word puzzles and writing in my paper journal. It felt good to do something else besides aimlessly flick channels. I hope I can continue to keep it up. :)

This is going to be difficult

Once upon a time there was a girl who watched very little tv. As she was growing up, she lived on a farm and there were only four tv stations that the antenna could pull in (in the days before cable and satellite tv). She watched the idiot box infrequently, preferring to spend her time with books.

Then she grew up and went to college, where she had no tv for the first nine weeks or so. Then she inherited a tv, and there was no going back.

In the summers when she was working away from home, the tv became her lifeline to the world. (No internet quite yet.) Then she graduated and moved away from home, and the tv became even more insidious.

She grew dependent, even though in one apartment, she only got three channels. She would watch PBS when there was nothing else on!

So then she eventually got married and was alone for long periods of time because the husband worked away from home. She watched and watched and watched—nothing! A kid was born and she threw herself into watching tv because she was depressed and feeling numb.

At one point, she transferred her addiction to a MMORPG, but eventually grew out of that. She settled back into watching 57 channels and nothing on.

A friend had no tv and seemed calmer and happier. The girl got inspired to give up her tv, too. How will it all turn out? Who knows. But she wants to be a good role model for her kid, who thinks that “Cops” is great television.
