I changed jobs twice and bought a house in 2009-2010, so charitable giving fell by the wayside for awhile. Earlier in 2011, I restarted payroll contributions. Right now I’m giving ~1% of gross to two organizations, a local community clinic and a local youth program.

2009 contribution

I just signed up for my 2009 payroll contribution. While I’m a very long way from 5% of gross salary, I’ve committed to almost three times as much as I gave last year.

I also feel better overall about the charity I picked. Rather than giving blindly to the local United Way chapter, I used charitynavigator.org to find a local 4-star rated charity that provides food, shelter, addiction-recovery, and education programs to help homeless people get back on their feet.

Giving feels good, and I can’t wait until I have the financial capabilitiy to do more!

long term goal

I have a significant amount of debt to repay before I can truly go after this goal, but I’ve been very blessed in my life, and would like to eventually donate 5% (or even more) to charity each year.
