I want to be generous but I have a hard time trusting people. I no longer ever give money to people that solicit over the phone. There are too many “professional” fund raisers that end up funding themselves more than the people that they are supposedly collecting for.
How do you know what a homeless person needs? I gave $10 to a guy for food. Then you go past the same spot a week or month later and that person is still there asking for money. Makes you wonder?
The other day a kid was a bit short to get his order at a fast food restaurant so I paid the difference. Why? I can’t really tell you. The kid said thanks (the cashier was more excited by the gesture than the kid). Afterwards he stared at me in the dining room. I felt like he thought I was some sort of psycho. Go figure. Guess kids can have a right to be wary too.
