2008 - Slumdog Millionaire 7 months ago

Oscar Wins:
Best Picture
Best Director
Best Cinematography
Best Film Editing
Best Original Score
Best Original Song
Best Sound Mixing
Best Adapted Screenplay

My Thoughts:

Trivia:
The first Best Cinematography Oscar winner to be predominantly shot in digital. This is also the first Best Picture Oscar winner since 1928 not to be shot on Kodak film (35mm segments were filmed on Fuji stocks).

2006 - The Departed 7 months ago

The Departed (Martin Scorsese, 2006).

Oscar Wins:
Best Picture
Best Director
Best Film Editing
Best Adapted Screenplay

My Thoughts:
Wow. That’s all I can say right now. The Departed was screened on TV last night and it was the first time I had watched it. Damn, I wish I had seen it a lot sooner.

Brilliantly shot and about time Scorsese won for Best Director! I could go on forever about the use of colour, the use of landscape and space.

Every actor is this film just nailed their performance. Damon and Di Caprio should both have definetely received Oscar nods as they were freaking amazing. And yay for Mark Walhberg who was just hilarious and spot-on and was incredibly worthy of his own nomination (I feel Wahlberg is massively underrated).

Trivia:
This is the movie with the most uses of the word “fuck” and its derivatives (237) to win the Best Picture Oscar.

2002 - Chicago 7 months ago

Chicago (Rob Marshall, 2002).

Oscar Wins:
Best Picture
Best Supporting Actress – Catherine Zeta Jones
Best Art Direction – Set Decoration
Best Costume Design
Best Editing
Best Sound

My Thoughts:
I have seen Chicago a number of times but for the purpose of this goal, it will involve watching all Best Picture films (and re-watching those I’d seen previously).

Chicago is a fantastic film, and I particularly love the way that the musical sequences are staged (the whole ‘show inside Roxie’s head’ idea works brilliantly).
I would definetely hold Chicago responsible for the re-invigoration of the movie musical over the past few years.

Trivia:
John Travolta, Kevin Spacey, John Cusack, Steve Martin and Hugh Jackman were all considered for the role of Billy Flynn.
