Every fall as a child my grandma traced my hand in order to make me a new pair of mittens. Then I would tell her what color I wanted them to be. They were perfect everytime, matching my current coat, or favorite color. Perfect for packing a snowball, or keeping my tiny hands warm on the walk to elementary school.
Now, a seasoned knitter myself, I’ve tried making mittens on many ocsasions. Much to my chagrin, I can’t seem to perfect these utilitarian masterpieces. I spent all last winter creating different patterns of red mittens that were hung around my apartment. My problem, it seems, is that I can’t make a thumb gusset without a hole between the thumb and hand. This greatly frustrates me, as I wish to continue this mitten making tradition.
Currently I am making a pair of wrist warmers for a friend, which includes an open topped thumb. Then I will attempt again a pair of mittens. This time I’m going to make two and wear them with pride, then continue to practice this thumb business!
