start a record label

I think about this a lot. It’s one of my favourite daydream subjects. A long running obsession.
Running a record label, a proper independent, home-run, record label, seems to have the possibility of being a way of being involved in music without necessarily having to compromise ones ideals and creativity. It offers the chance to help create and release music that you love without the inherent capitalist constraints of say owning a record shop (even a specialist independent one).
The internet offers a wonderful distribution channel and gives access to people all over the world with all kinds of obscure and specialist musical interests and passions. Through it even the most ‘out-there’ music can have relatively easy access to a large market of interested people.
