Although I am still very committed to this goal, it is proving rather difficult to make the switch. It is rather time-consuming to track down products that are not tested on animals without going online – the drugstores in my neighborhood are CRUMMY! – and even then it is hard to know if a product will be any good. I stumbled upon vegan dental floss, which works just as well as the regular kind (when I remember to work on that goal), but I am struggling to find a decent toothpaste that is not tested on animals. I tried Tom’s of Maine toothpaste and went through two tubes worth of it before deciding that I was tired of having to chew mint gum after brushing my teeth in order to make them feel clean. Alas, the search continues…

I am replacing Softsoap handsoap, which is tested on animals, with products from method, which is a company that produces environmentally friendly, biodegradable, non-toxic products that are not tested on animals. They also have nice smelling things and cool-looking bottles.
Eventually I may replace all my cleaning products with this.
Nearly everything out there is tested on animals, I am discovering. Its not just about cosmetics, its about cleaning products, PET FOOD… It is overwhelming to think about at first. So I have made a step-by-step plan for identifying and replacing animal testing in my life to the greatest extent possible.
(1) Prepare List of all my products
(2) Determine which have to go
(3) Gradually eliminate all my animal-tested beauty products and replace them with cruelty-free products (I can’t afford to get rid of all of the stuff at once)
(4) Prepare List of all cleaning products
(5) Determine which have to go
(6) Gradually eliminate all animal-tested cleaning products and replace them with cruelty-free products
(7) Determine if Nutro products are cruelty free (pet food)
(8) Find cruelty-free pet food and treats and buy them
(9) Help my boyfriend to eliminate his animal-tested products
The ironic thing about this is that because he uses more expensive products than I do, he is further along on this goal without even trying, because the more expensive products seem less likely to be tested on animals than the cheap ones.
