Before I write my first real song (i.e., excluding the faux classical pieces I wrote when I was 10), I wanted to ground myself in music theory. Last term, I took two music-theory courses: one in harmonic principles of tonal and atonal music, the other in fundamentals. This term, I’m attempting my first composition class, counterpoint. This is all very exciting and inspiring, not at all dry and boring like people make it out to be. Then again, I’m proud of my nerd legacy, so I want to inhale theory and make it part of me. Oh, I’m also going to start piano lessons next week. Yeah!

OK, I just started taking two music-theory classes to expand and deepen my foundation. Meanwhile, I’m going to start playing scales and other mundane but tried-and-true exercises on the piano to activate the muscle memory in my fingers. I’m so excited about these classes, I can’t even tell you! I’m reading chapters in the book that weren’t even assigned. But then again, I’ve always been like that. :/
Over the long weekend, I started to read a book on crafting lyrics to get myself in the creative mood for song-writing. It’s pretty basic so far, but I’m sure it’ll get more technical after page 50.
I also ordered a book on music theory to supplement my current base (from singing and piano).
I really want to see if I can do this. If I can’t, I can at least cross it off my list of things I’ve tried and move on to something else. Like guitar lessons! : D
