my thinking goes like this:

• I want to learn a Romance language
• I’d like to learn it with M so we can practice with each other
• M’s way ahead of me at French, and would like to learn another language too
• Italian is great, but it’s only spoken in Italy (well, you know what I mean)
• I think I’ll have too much trouble with the nasal vowels and throaty sounds of Portuguese (as Lonely Planet says it’s kind of like ‘a drunken Frenchman trying to speak Spainish’).
• Spanish (Castilian) is spoken in Spain and South America
• I’d like to visit South America – particularly Chile – in the future, and perhaps even consider another trip to Spain specifically to learn/improve my Spanish.
