Without even trying, I’ve succeeded at this. I have to eat smaller portions now or I’ll get sick; my appetite has gone way down. Now I eat probably about half as much per meal as I did before I started my diet in January, and I don’t snack nearly as much on junk as I used to. It’s amazing to me now how large most restaurant meals are, and I still serve myself larger portions at home than I can eat, simply out of habit – I haven’t gotten used to the fact that I can’t eat that much at once anymore.

In high school, I could eat whatever I wanted, whenever, and in whatever portions, and still not gain weight. My metabolism is starting to slow down now, and when I discovered that my favorite pants, which fit perfectly when I bought them three months ago, are no longer wearable, I decided it’s time to do something about it. My husband suggested that I try to eat smaller portions – we’ve both noticed that I tend to eat past the point where I’m full and then feel sick and sluggish afterwards. It’s a bad habit, and I’m going to break it.

So my goal right now is to teach myself to stop eating when I’m satisfied, rather than stuffed, even if there’s still food on my plate. Also, I think that finding a healthy but filling breakfat would help a lot – eggs and bacon on a bagel may be filling, but fattening, and a bowl of cereal just isn’t enough. I need something in between that’ll carry me through until lunch without being too fatty.

It’s difficult to tell myself “yes it tastes good, but you’d be eating more simply for the flavor of it, not becase you’re hungry”, but I think I’ll be okay. It helps that DH is present for two of my three meals each day and can help me keep myself in check.
