Well, it took four year, two months and one day, but on May 28th we completed on our adoption of four siblings—ages 8, 7, 7, and 5.
We always wanted to adopt (from the outset) but we proceeded through the foster care system, which meant that it was possible that the children would not be legally free for adoption. They were not, so we started out as foster parents—and stayed foster parents to our kids for 4 years (officially!!) until they were made ours last month.
This was a long process, but most DCF adoptions are not this convoluted. However, none of them are “simple” and straightforward, as all children come from another family and that means they will have future questions about that family, about an idea of loss and grief, and perhaps even a feeling of rejection.
Regardless of these downsides, our children are SO happy and loved! They were in danger in their previous lives, and we are proud to have provided them not only safety, but a future filled with possibility!
