Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

I was such a packrat when I was younger!

I spent 3 hours yesterday, solely on 2 shelves in my bookshelf and 1/4 of my closet. I had to throw out a bunch of stuff from middle school! I can’t believe I used to think those old notebooks would be useful to keep. The things I kept I’m very reluctant about. Basically, I would like to cut down the things I own so that I can theoretically fit it all in my car to move out (realistically, I will probably leave some artwork/etc at home).

Now, I need to:
*finish cleaning out the closet
*sell old textbooks or donate them
*donate old clothes
*clean out basement (most daunting)
*organize art supplies for move
*get some boxes & packing tape

This goal is back on top again!

I’m planning to move & I have so much stuff! I don’t want to drive to Chicago more than once to move my things – so I need to get rid of a lot of crap. Especially since my art will probably take a lot of space. Here are my plans:

Week 1 (9/22-23) – Go through room & closet.
Week 2 (9/29-30) – Finish last week’s work, go through basement.

Week 3 will probably involve figuring out how to move my art… lol.

Went through my room yesterday

I took the day yesterday to rearrange and go through my room. I didn’t get rid of a significant amount of stuff (just a garbage bag’s worth), but now my room feels a lot less claustrophobic than before. I had a lot of old boxes lying around, paintings that should have been in storage.. and some sculpture projects that I didn’t take care of, which crumbled away and were caked with an alarming amount of dust. I decided to take all of my art materials downstairs, since I really shouldn’t be trying to make art in my tiny room anyway (I threw away the sculptures though, something I never thought I’d do). I also need an additional lamp to go on my small bookshelf.. I can never get enough light in this room.

What’s left to do: go through my 2 bookshelves, vacuum under my bed (and put away the books under my bed), go through my closet and vacuum, clean up my studio room downstairs and vacuum. I’m most afraid of my closet. I have stacks of boxes in there from all the times I moved. I don’t want to just throw them away because there’s a chance that there is something in there that I’ve been looking for (like my calculator..), but at the same time, I haven’t touched them in a while, so they’re probably full of junk anyway. Oh, and I have accumulated a bagful of clothes I need to donate just by going through my dresser.. I wonder what will turn up by going through my closet again.

I used to like to collect and hold on to things a lot, but I’ve changed over the years to despise clutter. I hold on to movie tickets (I don’t go too often) and that’s about it. I’m just too lazy to go through all of the stuff that has accumulated throughout moving around.

Went to goodwill

I did it a few days ago.. it was very quick and easy, I just drove up to the donation door, handed off my stuff, and was on my way!

Next, I will probably go through the boxes in my closet, and then I’ll probably have to go to goodwill again.

need to go to goodwill

I’m so lazy.. I have bags of clothes and shoes lying around that I’ve been meaning to donate and haven’t looked at for months. I really need to clean out my room.

I really want to do this before Jan 1st!

This is problem for me

I keep so many things, it completely goes against my goals of being a nomad for the next decade. I have to purge.

I need to sort through my stuff and donate/recycle!

I have a closet and a part of the basement full of stuff I haven’t looked at in years. I’ve even carried some stuff moving from place to place. It’s time to clear it out.
