someone told me

that when it starts ponging petrochemicals round here it means spring is on the way.

which means spring has definitely arrived. Now we just have to wait for the weather to catch up :)

today

I learnt that the little dingdong you get when a microsoft mail comes is nicked off Cat Stevens’ Trouble song.

At least that’s my theory. Don’t listen to it at work it’ll drive you bonkers.

today

I learnt that if you have lots of sugar in your coffee it screws up your laptop keyboard much worse than if you don’t.
I learnt that even if you spilled the coffee on the right hand side the left hand side can get seriously weird.
I learnt how to make back-ups.
I learnt how not to get so attached to a computer that I didn’t even cry as it died.

Learning. it’s all good.

Yeah right.

Today

I learnt that if you put the big items on the end of the washing line that is furthest away from the peg bag you save energy by having the pegs at hand for the little items.

The only reasons for doing it the other way round would be
non easily detachable peg bag
ignorance
having a dynamo on one’s feet which helps prevent resource wars

Now if I’d written that in to Bella magazine I might have won twenty quid.

today

I did not learn one new thing. See, that’s why, after so many days with this goal there are so few entries (okay not strictly true but some things I can’t talk about).

Okay, I learnt that Scott McClellan has “resigned”, no doubt to be replaced by a better liar, seeing as how we’re all gearing up for Iran and all. Fair dos Scott. You have lied well for your country. I do hope you will go now and write your memoirs, and have them illegally published and smuggled through to us; you could still redeem yourself.

I learnt that it is possible to be told you have three months to live in your own country, come to France for healthcare and be alive and talking to me seven years later. If only that had been my dad.

I learnt that I have to get used to calendars, because whether I like it or not, time passes and I have to plan some things.

Okay, I didn’t learn any new words.

today

i learnt that traders sometimes use a theory based on the fibonacci sequence to predict prices, in the stock market and stuff. And actually get taken seriously for doing so. Man that sounds insane. It seems like the trading version of “buy this cream and put it on your thighs and you will be a thin person”. To me it just seems hideous to think that people’s using money could recreate nature’s patterns. Please God no! Unless enough people used it and it became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Heeee, I’m intrigued. And wondering whether there are other sacred geometric witchcrafty (wondering, should I say “mathematicky”) type things being used on a daily basis that i didn’t know about. I mean, there’s probably all kinds of weird shit out there.

But the Fibonacci numbers? My insticts are pleading with me that this cannot be so.

i'm in

one of those scribally verbose moods where I’d just like to say that in my other life it is required of me that I learn a certain subset for want of a better word, of the English language that I am thinking i could probably do without.

That’s why this goal has been so inactive of late. My new-word learning thirst is being amply over-satisfied by the day job.

Just realized

I have written over 500 entries. Aargh please somebody shut me up! Put me out of my misery! Take away the ability to type (however slowly) from me.

Bored bored bored bored with the idea that I’m trying to do something useful with my life. And yet i’m not. What the bloody hell shall I do with it? I’ve even thought of being a botanist. I need help.

i learnt

that one can do sculpture with gelatinous rice.
If one can sculpt, that is.

like...

“une burne” is not the correct translation for a female geek. God how did I come to that conclusion?
