Movies 19 through 24

19.) Out of Africa, One of Robert Redford’s best films and based on a true story at that. It’s interesting, the parallels between this and what’s going on now over there.

“If I know a song of Africa, of the giraffe and the African new moon lying on her back, of the plows in the fields and the sweaty faces of the coffee pickers, does Africa know a song of me?”

20.) The English Patient. Another beautiful film about love and revenge in Northern Africa during WWII.

“I once traveled with a guide who was taking me to Faya. He didn’t speak for nine hours. At the end of it he pointed to the horizon and said, “Faya!” That was a good day.”

21.) What Dreams My Come, in my opinion one of Robbin Williams’s finest roles.

“Thought is real. Physical is the illusion. Ironic, huh?”

22.) About a Boy, a movie taken from a book by one of my favorite authors, Nick Hornby. A great story about growing up for both adults and kids.

“Having been Will the Good Guy, I didn’t relish going back to my usual role of Will the Unreliable, Emotionally Stunted Asshole.”

23.) Where the Buffalo Roam, yes, years before Johnny Depp did his famous Hunter S. Thompson impersonation the original master, Bill Murray was capturing the essence of the great writer and this is him, doing that impression in the adaptation of, `Fear and Loathing on the campaign trail’. Aparently to the chagrin of the SNL cast, Murray stayed in character almost 6 months after the filming was complete.

“I hate to advocate drugs or liquor, violence, insanity to anyone. But in my case it’s worked.”

24.) The World According to Garp, another Robin Williams favorite and again, from another great author, John Irving. Disturbing and irreverant, but a great adaptation.

We’ll take the house. Honey, the chances of another plane hitting this house are astronomical. It’s been pre-disastered. We’re going to be safe here.”

Movies 13 through 18

13.) The Great Escape, by god, if I had my druthers, Steve would make that motorcycle jump EVERY TIME!

“Into the cooler!!!”

14.) Mystery Men, A Ben Stiller favorite, runs the gamut of superheroes. My favorite part is the Sphinx and his many zen-like insane meanderings.

“I… am the Waffler. With my griddle of justice, I BASH the enemy in the head, or I burn them like so! I also have some truth syrup, which is low in fat. I Also have this theme song. Waffle Man! Gold and crispy! Bad Guys Are History! “

15.) The Prince of Tides, ok so it’s sappy and I lose southern-cred for liking this one, and it sorta-kinda makes us all out to be traumatized, suicidal nutjobs but man, it was filmed in a beautiful area, (Beaufort, SC) and it actually does sorta embody what it’s like to be from `down there’.

“It’s the Southern Way; when things get too painful, we either avoid them or we laugh.”

16.) Patton – Since we’re going with the dominant male thing here. Great film, documents (albeit losely) the great WWII General’s life and times from N. Africa through the European campaign.

“I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.”

17.) Burnt By the Sun, Russian film that paints an extraordinary realistic, yet beautiful picture of what life was like under Stalin in 1930’s Russia. Idyllic and scary at the same time. I count this amoung one of the top ten movies that need to be seen to understand Russian culture.

“Have you been to the zoo? Why did you run away then? Did they not feed you well?”

18.) Twelve Monkeys, completely switching gears from such a beautiful movie to a bleak dystopian future. Great paradox/time-travel film, Brad Pitt at his finest. And directed by Terry Gilliam, which makes it an automatic favorite.

“Cassandra in Greek legend, you recall, was condemned to know the future but to be disbelieved when she foretold it. Hence the agony of foreknowledge combined with the impotence to do anything about it.”

Movies 7 through 12

7.) Sneakers, a must for anyone who `works in the industry’. The fun part is guessing the real-life models for each of the characters. (Here’s a hint, `Whistler’ pretty much sums it up, right there. :)

“You know I could have been in the NSA, but they found out my parents were married”

8.) The Hudsucker Proxy. Truly, one of the Cohen Bros’ best films to date in my opinion, beating even `Fargo’ and `Raising Arizona’.

“You’re a MUNCIE girl?!”

9.) Take the Money and Run, one of Woody Allen’s early movies and one of his best, (although there are so damn many of `his best’.)

“After fifteen minutes I wanted to marry her, and after half an hour I completely gave up the idea of stealing her purse.”

10.) Full Metal Jacket, truly one of the best movies about war, ever made. A Kubrick favorite. Hell, an all-round favorite. Probably the most true depiction of basic training I’ve ever seen.

“Sir, the private believes that any answer he gives will be wrong! And his senior drill instructor will beat him harder if he reverses himself, sir!”

11.) Lawrence of Arabia, Story of the famous T.E. Lawrence and his role in Arab independence. Great movie.

“Young men make wars, and the virtues of war are the virtues of young men: courage, and hope for the future. Then old men make the peace, and the vices of peace are the vices of old men: mistrust and caution.”

12.) Dune, and as long as we’re talking about desert stories, the 80’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel is pretty damn good, then again I’m a David Lynch fan through and through.

“We Fremen have a saying: “God created Arakis to train the faithful.” One cannot go against the word of God.”

Movies 1 through 6

1.) The entire `Aliens’ series. (Yes, that includes Alien, Aliens, Alien3 and Alien: Resurrection and yeah, they all count as one film, so STFU.) I mean come on man, how you can you be from the USA and not seen any of these amazing cult films? Example: The other day this conversation took place:

Mous:“What are we going to do about it? Shit dude, I think we should take off and nuke the site from orbit, that’s what I think we should do!”

User:(without missing a beat) – “Of course, it’s the only way to be sure.”

2.) Brazil by Terry Gilliam.

“Don’t fight it son. Confess quickly! If you hold out too long you could jeopardize your credit rating.”

3.) Cool Hand Luke. Because if you’re at all against `The System’, then you’ve gotta hear the last 20 minutes of this film.

“That ditch is Boss Kean’s ditch. And I told him that dirt in it’s your dirt. Now what’s your dirt doin’ in his ditch?”

4.) The Cider House Rules. John Irving, quite possibly the only author whose works I’ve ever been able to tolerate in movie form.

“Goodnight, you princes of Maine. You kings of New England.”

5.) Go, if nothing else because it’s the American version of `Human Traffic’.

“They can’t evict you on Christmas! Then you’d be ho-ho-homeless!”

6.) Human Traffic. Five friends, one weekend, Cardiff, Wales. It’s like an artistic version of `Trainspotting’. The bonus is the kick-ass soundtrack.

“The Emperor… He like, wants to conquer outer space. Yoda… He wants to explore inner space.”
