I’ve been at my job for three damn years without starting my 401k; I didn’t do it because I don’t really make all that much money and I’d rather have it in my pocket now. Stupid, right? My company matches 50% up to 5% of my income, so why am I giving up free money for my retirement? I got an information packet today, so I’m going to sit down and figure out how much I can afford to contribute… won’t be much at all, but at least it’ll be something. At 28, I really need to start being proactive about managing my money better and saving.
My boyfriend, too… he’s 37, but has spent his life living all across the country and mostly working at restaurants, having bachelor-ly adventures. I don’t think he’s got anything saved, which is so bad at his age! We were talking to a friend the other night about retirement, who joked that my poor beau is going to wind up as a Wal-Mart greeter if he doesn’t get his shit together. Now he’s settled into a teaching job, so I’ve got to encourage him to start his 401k while I’m getting mine going.
