I love volunteering in my kids' schools on Fridays 14 months ago

Its something that my kids and their teachers can count on. I love working in the library at my daughter’s school. Maybe I could turn this into more than a volunteer job? If not at the school, maybe one of the local libraries I frequent?

Volunteered to help out once a week at my kids' schools 15 months ago

I’ll be helping in the library at my 6th grader’s school. I went in today for the first time and I love being in the library. The librarian is nice and I’ve had experience volunteering in school libraries before, so I can be easily helpful. So it was very fun.

I met with my little guy’s teacher briefly last night and am on the hook to do math games with the 1st graders starting next week. There will be three adults coming it at once so that we can have three math game stations and rotate the kids through. That will be a lot of fun too!

Both of these opportunities are on Friday, which is my day off, so it works out great.

Staying with it and finding something new 16 months ago

Been still volunteering at the humane society with my kids. It will be harder with the kids in school now, but I’m still planning on going once a week with or without them. The last time we went it was weird, so I really need to force myself to go back and keep on track.

I’ve also signed up to volunteer at my two youngest kids’ schools. So, my guess is I’ll go in a couple times a week on my days off and help out with SOMETHING with the kids’ classes. I’ll find out what in the next week or so.

Volunteered my truck and myself... 17 months ago

...to go pick up a washer & dryer from a family in Dedham so that it can be delivered on a trailer of stuff going up to Machias, ME.

Wow. 17 months ago

What an amazing week I just had. I volunteered to help NEighbors helping Neighbors in Machias Maine. Machias is in the poorest county in Maine. Our team of 33 built steps to replace rotting steps, replaced roofs that were failing, painted houses that were way overdue for painting, among other projects. I built walls and a floor in a garage that is being turned into a home for a single mother. I installed insulation and demolished a rotting roof and entryway. I also painted and helped supervise the youth group who was with us painting. It was great. We built with materials, but we also built relationships with these folks in Machias and gave them hope that they aren’t in this alone. It really was a magical week.

Machias is not far from the “blueberry capital of maine”. Thousands of migrant workers flood the county to pick blueberries at this time of year. These folks come sometimes with only the shirts on their backs. I spent two days manning the thrift store. For $1 anyone can come in and take as many things as will fit in a garbage bags. Blankets and men’s work clothes were the most needed, but so many people came through needing SO many things. Long pants and long sleeve shirts to protect the workers from the pesticides…. Eye opening.

All I can say is wow.

Saturdays are the best! 17 months ago

Volunteered at the humane society again today and decided that saturdays are the best. We fed and watered dogs and cats, washed dishes and walked dogs. Then played with the kitties. My daughter is in dog heaven!!

Tomorrow I leave for the mission trip I’m taking with the church. I’m pretty nervous about it (it is outside my comfort zone), but it should be a good growth experience for me and for my daughter.

Went back again this morning 17 months ago

to the humane society. My little guy and I walked and socialized with two VERY strong and excited dogs. It was great to get them out and run with them! We walked/ran 2 miles, picked up litter and did a little bit of training with them. Very fun.

When we were done we went into the cat area and socialized with the kitties. Some of them are very unsocial, others are complete loves and there are many in between. It was nice to spend some time and see a couple of them really open up and play. That was fun too.

I’m loving this volunteer gig.

Our first real day of volunteering 17 months ago

Went with my son to the humane society this morning. Walked a very lovable and energetic rotweiller named Kaito and then walked a sweet greyhound named Torva with such sad eyes. So we did a good deed and got a 2 mile walk in with our furry friends. We also picked up beer cans along our route. Littering drives me insane. Next time I’m bringing a plastic bag…

Completed orientation and volunteered.... 18 months ago

....at the humane society with my daughter. We learned all about the shelter, socialized with the cats and walked a beagle named Zippy. My daughter LOVES animals and this is something I think we’ll really enjoy to do together.

Stopped at the humane society with my younger daughter 18 months ago

we’ve decided that together we are going to volunteer at the animal shelter. Got an application and played with the cats. Waiting to hear when the next orientation is.
