learn to swing dance

A dance aquaintance asked if I’d like to get together and practice in his garage, maybe take a lesson or two. My goal here is to get 5 to 6 dance steps down comfortably and build from there. Having someone to dance with is going to get that going. Yea me for taking a chance.

Mr. Spinny has five moves on the dance floor and they all involve spinning the woman till she’s nauseated. He thinks he’s a great dancer and is very proud of his elaborate arm moves. He doesn’t understand why you avoid him and if he does ask you to dance you say no because, you know the night is over if you say yes out of politeness.

If you are a guy, learning to dance, please, please no more than 2 or three spins per dance. Spins are the icing, not the cake.

A local restaurant/music place. Wow. Monday nights they play great swing music and it was packed. Mostly with youngsters…sigh…I actually had this conversation with one dance partner, “so what jr.high did you go to?” Oh but so what, people were dancing and it was fun.

my daughter’s high school had a music program. They played big band music and sang 40s tunes. It was terrific. My daughter had on her vintage sailor dress and sang a solo. (BEAM!) Anyway they encouraged everyone to get up and dance and we did! I have to say it was a blast knowing how to do a little swing number. I didn’t look up at all those parents but I think some of the women were thinking…I’d love to do that but my husband would never do that. GO WITHOUT HIM! He’ll get curious and follow you later I told a couple of them.

trading and bartering. I bartered a individual lesson with a woman who teaches around here for a massage gift certificate. I’m getting kind of antsy to learn this already.

Glad I brought a man with me. It helps. The ratio at the last class was 11 women to 3 men. Not good for learning no matter how positive I was trying to be.

We learned several advanced Lindy steps and it was iffy getting out the door at 7 to go but I’m glad I did.

My daughters and I are starting Swing lessons on Thursday! Hoo-ray!
