I could choose to remind myself that the fight with my daughter yesterday was because her filter and mine are different. She’s seeing me and my motives differently than I am. If I saw through her filter…maybe I could understand why she was so upset.

So today at my favorite coffee shop, I was heading to a nondrafty corner where I could plug in my laptop. A woman was at the table near it. She gave me a dirty look and pointed to another table (in the drafty area) and said…”That one has a plug”. I said,”Am I bothering you?” she said…”This place is full of tables, why do you have to pick this one?” I guess it was her frown and unpleasant tone that made it…unpleasant. Instead of engaging her I just moved, call it an act of compassion. At first I was annoyed, but then I thought I don’t want to feel bad about it. Maybe she’s having a crap day. Maybe she’s ill. I’m going to cut her a break and also myself and not take it personally. Then I can get on with my day and not waste any energy on unpleasantness. I mean the minute before that happened I was a okay happy. I wanted to stay that way.
