I’ve changed my work email settings so that it automatically checks less often (20 minutes instead of 5), and doesn’t interrupt me with an on-screen alert each time a new message arrives. That’s much less intrusive. I can recommend it. It’s making it easier to get things done.

Email is a time sink

It’s mostly spam and viruses and people asking me to do them a favour, for not much return to me. I don’t mind helping people out but when all the requests are aggregated it’s a real time and energy drain. Checking once or twice a day ought to be enough really, but it’s tempting to check more often just in case there is that rare treasure of a proper friendly greeting from a friend.
