There was this decision that had been hanging fire for ages about the furniture to be bought for our house, and finally culminated in our fixing the next Monday for that inevitable visit to the furniture store. So the day came when my spouse and I decided that it was take to take the dreaded trip to buy something new for the bedroom. Why dreaded? Shouldn’t buying new furniture be fun? Well, normally I would have to say yes, but in our particular situation, it had become a real tug-of-war. I’ll explain why.
The basic problem is that although in everything else we seem to get along wonderfully, when it comes to style, that’s where we start to butt heads, and particularly when it comes to the way that our house is supposed to look. It’s not much of a problem of course, but it has become something of a game for both of us, and the aim has been to win. Whereas I generally like a more traditional look for the house, my spouse tends toward a contemporary feel, and this means that when the time comes to buy new furniture there is always a big discussion.
The point in discussion was what kind of bed to get for our bedroom. My spouse naturally wanting to get something more modern, such as the contemporary platform beds, which are usually much lower to the ground, have a more sleek and simple style, and generally follow the modern trends of today’s design and house fashion.
On the other hand, I was much more interested in getting a traditional bedroom furniture set, and so I wanted a bed with a more colonial feel, a nice comfortable mattress, strong and sturdy frame, with a ornamentation along with it. Well, of course we were unable to come to any decision in our discussion, at least initially. In the end, our argument continued into the furniture store, which began with a discussion of sectional sofas, then moved on to bathroom sinks.
To cut a long story short, along the way my spouse saw a modern leather recliner which became the subject of discussion until we finally came to the bedroom section.
Finally, we came to an agreement. We decided that we would get more traditional furniture for the bedroom, with a slight modern twist to it (we found a great bed that we both liked), and we decided to get that recliner that my spouse really wanted after all.
The point of the story is that even when you have a house where two people have radically different ideas in mind about style and how it is to be furnished, you can always come to an agreement if you try to compromise. Style and furnishing is about what fits—and making things fit means that everyone in the end needs to be happy.
