a few years back the law was changed making hitting your kid assault, it’s illegal to hit a dog, though not some animals. It’s never justified under our law to hit another person, in fact the cops usually charge the person who wins the fight with assault, not the one who throws the first punch. Provocation is also going to be removed as defense for violence though it usually is only used in murder trails anyway.

The christian right (Catholics, destinies’ church and the evangelists) along with some supporters got two hundred thousand people to sign a petition which forced a citizens referendum, millions (not all but more than half of eligible voters) sent back their voting papers and the overwhelming response was to repeal the act so it would be legal to hit kids. It sounds like the government will ignore the vote and smacking kids will remain a crime, since the law’s been in no one has had jail time 13 people got fined and a few hundred have been warned.

Do you think it should be legal to hit kids if you’re a parent?

I just stood in line in the blistering Dunedin cold to go $700 overdrawn for ACDC tickets, I have no way of getting to Wellington yet, or anywhere to stay and my mate is out at sea so I’m guessing he’ll want to buy one of them and the woman my other ticket’s for doesn’t know yet and may not want to come either. I work a minimum wage, casual job I have less than a weeks rent in cash, but it’s ACDC man!
