Ugh.
I need to buy gloves and just wear them. If my nails didn’t look so horrible I would be less tempted to ‘fix’ them but they need to grow to heal.

I heard that a computer keyboard is more dirty than a toilet seat. That should stop me from biting my nails when I’m using the computer.

So I was doing really well with this for about 3 days but then I just gave up and bit all my nails. But now I am trying again.
I’ve been putting hand lotion around my nails and when the skin around my nails is soft and smooth I am less tempted to bite.

Also I am planning to put the rubber band back on my wrist and perhaps even put tape around my fingers.
Gum is very important for me to have. Sometimes, I am ashamed to admit, I will remind myself for a few seconds about why I should not bite my nails then I will do it anyway. Gum will distract me. Also I heard some pretty gross stories about nail biting so I can think of that to dissuade me next time, lol.

A few steps back ...  — 3 months ago

Well I went to a conference over the weekend and so I competely forgot this goal. While listening to speeches, I bit my nails. I didn’t do extreme damage but nonetheless they’re not any longer. And I FORGOT MY RUBBER BAND! That thing is so useful because if I have something to do with my hands, I won’t bite my nails!

Actually someone gave me this idea. I should replace my habit of biting nails with playing with rubber band – something similar, basically. Then, hopefully when I’ve rid myself of the nail-biting habit, I can just not wear a rubber band on my wrist and that would take care of the rubber band habit.
I was watching Nickelodean too and it said experts say it takes only 21 days to kick a bad habit. I’m a little doubtful about that, but I’m just going to be optimistic and believe it.

Rubber Band  — 3 months ago

I put a rubber band around my wrist today and it helped a lot. Firstly, when I had nothing to do with my hands I would stretch it and play with it (yeah I know, classmates were looking at me strangely!) so I couldn’t bite my nails. And also, when I did once almost bite my nails, I ‘hit’ myself with it on the arm, doesn’t really hurt but it’s a reminder.

I hope I can do this … if anyone else has tried to stop this habit before, though, you probably know that days/weeks go by with no nail-biting and then in one hour you can blow all that work. Anyway, I’ll try to be more optimistic than this. ;)

Intro  — 3 months ago

Argh! I’ve been biting my nails for so long (I don’t remember when I started, I’m 14 now) and I would really like to stop. But two years ago I picked up an even more annoying habit, biting my lips and then the inside of my cheek, so I want to stop that too. It’s disgusting, I will say that myself … only it doesn’t seem to help with stopping the habit.

So I read ideas from other people who’ve tried this … I know that chewing gum helps. And filing and polishing my nails does help, because they look better and feel better so I’m less tempted to bite them. The problem is my nails are kind of too short to file, lol! I should also put on chap stick so my lips are less dry and I don’t chew on them at all. I don’t know. I just filed/polished my nails and we’ll see how it goes today.
