My knowledge of Cantonese all came from karaoke and TV/movies. Therefore I can understand the standard language reasonably well, but hardly know any of the slang…

Speaking is a bit tricky, given that it has as many 9 tones (Mandarin has 4 and Shanghainese has 5 or 6).

A friend of mine has given me this important tip: when you don’t know the Cantonese of a word, stick in the English of it, in Cantonese-like intonation, since this is their favorite way of speaking.
