We are now living in the 5th wheel. We have been living off-grid but don’t have solar. We have had nothing but problems with generators, invertors, batteries, etc. In hind sight, this would have been better done with some savings build up and having bought the solar first. But, it costs so much to just keep the batteries charged enough for the refrigerator to stay cold that it is keeping us broke. We mostly use propane, too, which is cheaper than gasoline. We just got our tax return and are getting ready to hook to the grid. We hear how cheap it is where we no live and it sounds great compared to what we’ve been spending.
We still want to build an alternative home, but we are going to start off with a storage building with an apartment on top. We will be doing post & beam and some alternative methods for the living quarters – passive solar for one. It is all going too slow for my taste. The 5th wheel is really getting old. It will be great to have electricity though!
