I finished “The Devil in the White City” last week. It was interesting and a good read. I’m struggling through “Guns, Germs and Steel.” I’m probably 2/3 of the way through, so I really just need to sit down and read. I got some suggestions from friends on what to read for my 5th book (my goal was 5 non-fiction books this year). The best of them sound like “The Double Helix” about the discovery of DNA, or “1491” about the Americas before Europeans “discovered” it.
Before I started this I didn’t really think non-fiction could be enjoyable to read, I thought of it as always being work. I was definitely wrong!

Two down. “The Omnivore’s Dilemna” by Michael Pollan was also excellent. I just started a book of travel memoirs from women traveling in Asia. It’s put out by Lonely Planet? Not bad so far, but not great either. The stories are a bit short, missing some kind of depth. The one about biking Shikoku in Japan made me really want to make it down there, though, so I guess the book isn’t a waste (I live in Japan only a few hours from Shikoku, so I could really go any time).

My goal is to read 5 non-fiction books in 2006. I just finished “Collapse” by Jared Diamond and it was excellent! I also have on hand:
“Guns, Germs and Steel” by Diamond
“The Onmivore’s Dilemna” by Michael Pollan
“Get a Financial Life” by Beth… something
Maybe I’ll add some travel memoirs to that?
