Some of my good friends went down with a student delegation a few years ago, and from all accounts they had a great time. They gave a teach-in at our school following the trip and gave accounts of their advancements in sustainable agriculture, the community between folks, and how 12 year old Cubans knew more about American politics than most 25 year olds here.
From my understanding, it’s much harder to get down there now-a-days but I’d very much like to take a visit before our country swallows up their culture (here’s hoping it doesn’t).
(disclaimer: I’m not one to glorify the political structure/status of their country and don’t discount some of the issues there are; however, anyone critical should probably take a more realistic view of the status of our nation as well)
