How to help... 3 years ago

Thanks for all the restaurant reviews, but you should put them over on 43places.com so people can read them when they’re looking for them…

First, search around the site and see if someone already has your place. There are a lot of restaurants already on the site, and you can easily add content to them just like you do with 43things. If you click “I’ve been here!” or “I want to go here!”, you can add an entry, photos or tags.

If you want to add a new place, start on the New York City page on 43places.com and navigate down into the right borough and neighborhood. [If you don’t quite know where it is, just add it to the top of NYC and someone will sort it into place later.] When you get as close as you can, click on “Add a Place” and type in the name in the little box that appears.

Every museum... 3 years ago

I found a few lists of museums today and decided that NYC should have a definitive list of every museum in the five boroughs. I added a bunch, but I still have more to go. The museums I’ve added could also use some attention. Most of them are pretty obscure, so I put the ones I didn’t know in Manhattan. If you’ve been to any of the obscure ones, write a quick review!

Adding your favorites... 3 years ago

I have a mini-goal I’d like a bunch of us to take on…

Try to add one place to the city map each day. You can add your coffee shop, the place where you had lunch, a bar you went to over the weekend or a tiny museum that isn’t added yet. Be sure to tag it and put it in the right borough + neighborhood. If you have time, write a review—even a line or two helps someone else get a sense of the place.

We're awesome, as usual... 3 years ago

I think NYC is looking pretty good on the whole. With the exception of Staten Island, everything’s sorted into a neighborhood, and we have lots of neighborhoods popping up. Robots—what’s next?

I really don’t know much about the outer boroughs other than the neighborhoods where my friends live, so it’s been cool to surf with a purpose and read up on city nieghborhoods. I learned all about our islands the other day to add them into the harbor and the East River. Now I know where Hell Gate is…

outer boroughs. 3 years ago

New York City and Manhattan are doing well. I’ve categorised most of lower Manhattan and moved things into neighborhoods. I’m trying to do the same to the outer boroughs, but I don’t really know them that well. If any of you guys have time, take a look at a borough or neighborhood that you’ve visited or know well.

Here’s a cool map of the neighborhoods in NYC, just in case you need it when you come across something that just doesn’t look right:

http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/neighbor/neigh.shtml

Offical people: I don’t know if you want to go in and actually make pages for all of these neighborhoods or just let people add them in organically. Some of them are really small—Noho is tiny and kind of obscure. It’s about ten blocks total, and I don’t think I ever met anyone who “lived” in Noho.

How to help... 3 years ago

On any page within 43places, there’s a link to “help improve this page”. If you go there, it’ll show you the places that still need various types of information. I’ve gone through most of NYC and Manhattan and a smattering of the downtown neighborhoods and labeled things as destinations, neighborhoods and “to dos”. If you have some downtime, spend a minute looking at the places in your neighborhood. The categories are really general, so you can pick out most of them easily. When you don’t know what type of place something is, usually the person who made it will have left you a clue or you can google it…

has anyone seen this? 3 years ago

http://www.43places.com/locals/view/105154

I stumbled upon it by accident, but it’s a localising page for NYC! Right now it lets anyone who has a minute link together more information about the city.

I wish they’d add a “store” in addition to the “restaurant/museums” category—I’m sure there are little girls out there who think the American Girl store is as interesting as a museum, but they don’t quite belong in the same category…

I asked... 3 years ago

I asked three people - someone I’d cheered before who’s from NYC and two people who had 43-things related goals in their list. It would be great to find those last four soon-ish - it’d really show up Cleveland! [How did Cleveland get to this faster than us, anyway?]

Cool! 3 years ago

We’re five already!

I live near Union Square—where are the rest of you? Do we have all five boroughs?
