Flint and Steel

I actually bought a little kit, it contains a piece of flint and a steel striker, and some tinder and instructions. I tried it but couldn’t get many sparks and couldn’t get any sparks to light. There was something in the instructions about making “char cloth” which I guess is partially burnt cloth, kind of like what charcoal is to wood, and supposedly char-cloth lights much easier when a spark hits it. I need to practice more. I don’t want to have to resort to one of those magnesium things that produce a shower of sparks.
