im planning my road trip 3 months ago

so im from New Zealand and me and a couple of girls are planning our road trip across america from lA to NY for next year. so who easy is it to do? what do i need to organise. im just planning on buying my plane tickets over and back and thats it, hit the road, but im sure its not going to be that easy. any help would be great. mel
