After a couple weeks of hibernation, the building project is back at full swing. Even as I write, the guys are laying down the floor of the second story; the walls of the first floor went up yesterday. Just outside, there is pounding and shouting, power tools roaring and sawdust flying. It’s exciting. And just a bit stressful—with the shouting and pounding and such. But very cool.
After an exciting week of dealing with misdirected inspection appointments, misunderstandings, and stress, we have a floor. The cement truck came this morning and the guys pushed the cement around with tools like a huge deep batch of frosting. It seems awfully cold to me but I’ve been assured that the hardening up process gives off enough heat to keep it from freezing.
The guys working here have noted my photo-snapping with some bemusement. I’m really not taking pictures of them!
Thursday the block guys worked a good part of the day raising 3 courses of brick. The brick goes up that high because of the slope of the yard, which I never paid much attention to before. The walls are perfectly straight and even and look so permanent!
Friday they spent moving the dirt evenly around inside the walls and then laying an even layer of sand. They got the whole structure covered with a tarp before the rain started. It rained all night.
The footings were dug on Monday. The cement was poured yesterday. Today has been haul away the dirt day. There’s a lot of dirt. The yard is very messy and very different looking. I don’t know what I expected!—but not this much dirt!
The silt fence passed inspection on Friday, which gave permission for the next step to begin today as soon as it was light: digging the footings.
The rumble of the backhoe has been a constant companion this morning. Given the size and shape of the lot and the gardens, some hand-digging was also required. Very exciting times. I’ll try soon to post some pictures of mud and dirt being moved around the yard.
