who trashes their birth certificate?!

i work for a us-canada cruise line and the last time i went
to victoria b.c. i put my birth certificate in with my tickets and ended up throwing it away. since then i have been having the worst time trying to get a replacement. i think a passport would be easier to keep track of (especially since next year it will be required in any case) and anyway, i want the stamps!
and having one will bring me one step closer towards completing my other goal of seeing the world! :)
