Starting small

2011 seems to be the year I start taking goal this seriously instead of just hoping it’ll happen magically “one day”. Not terribly serious, yet, but I am listening to the excruciatingly basic pimsleur short course on the way to and from work (while everyone around me wonders why that girl is talking to herself).

That’ll be done by next week. I’ve got a podcast (Ta falado: http://coerll.utexas.edu/brazilpod/tafalado/) lined up after that, which will last a while longer. This is turning into a bit of an experiment for me, namely trying to learn a language primarily (or only firstly) via audio, rather than visually/from a book. I’m a bit cocky at the moment – I decided last week to try reading a Spanish novel, which I don’t speak at all and have never learned, and it’s going much better than expected (I speak some Italian and had loads of Latin in school) – but I only have to listen to some Brazilian music to realize I don’t understand a word of this language really. I wonder if it will end up sounding less magical and beautiful if I ever do manage to understand it. I hope not.
