- Find an elephant (i.e. set a goal).
- Break it down. Break the goal down into small manageable steps. This will help me to stay focused and not feel so overwhelmed.
- Steps can be tasks or even entire projects.
- In the event that a step is a project, break the project down into tasks.
- Keep a task-list (todo-list) & have it with me at all times to add things as they spring to mind.
- Prioritise each step (project and/or task) based on how significantly it moves me towards meeting my goal.
- Schedule time every day to work on the goal. Do Priority A Work during my peak time of the day.
- Schedule Priority B Work (i.e. daily, weekly, monthly tasks, projects & appointments that are part of the work that must be done in order to maintain the status quo) after or between Priority A Work (because this work does not require high levels of concentration, it can be done during non-peak periods as long as it is completed on schedule).
- Identify what I need to get each step (project and/or task) done & get it.
- What’s the (or a realistic) deadline?
- Roughly divide all steps involved into an equal amount of work every day (allow myself more time than I think I need)
- Schedule in breaks.
- Reward myself with fun stuff AFTER I worked on my goal
- Keep track of my accomplishments with a tada-list. Update it every evening.
- Every evening re-prioritise & decide on 3-5 tasks to accomplish the next day. Focus ONLY on those tasks & complete them before moving on to new tasks.
Project A —-> GOAL <—- Project B
. Task (Project A) . Task (Project B)
. Task (Project A) . Task (Project B)
. Task (Project A) . Task (Project B)
- Taking action is essential!
- Visualise where I want to be in a month’s time, in six month’s time, in a year’s time & write it down!
- Say NO to time robbers!
