This is a little goldfinch that has fallen in love with our front window. He spends most of the day perched on the windowsill, peeking in and occasionally pecking at the glass. He will fly around back where the feeders are, so we know he’s not a lost fledgling. Maybe he can hear the dog toys squeaking and thinks his mom is inside. He’s never bonked his head on the glass, and we know he can see in because he reacts to movement.
It’s a mystery. I love goldfinches and they are now one of the most common birds in my yard. I never had them when I lived in Madison and now they come to the feeders while I am right next to them. Whatever is going on in this little bird’s head, I don’t know, but it cheers me up to see his perky little face peeking in at me.
This photo took a lot of tries to capture because my camera has 12x optical zoom and going above into digital degrades the quality. I had to move closer very slowly to avoid scaring him off, especially with the big lens looking at him like a giant eye. I couldn’t do anything about the glass smudges and I want to kiss whoever invented image stabilization. At that level of zoom, you can’t live without it.
