Where Are the Damn Negatives?

I found a service locally that would digitize my pictures if I just gave them the negatives… could I have thrown them out? Why would I do that? Why am I asking myself such weird questions?
OK will have to go the longhand route and get them scanned in. Need to find a service that will do this cus I’m not gonna… it will take ages.
Question: What do I need to look for in a scanner to ensure the resultant images will look OK on a DVD slideshow?
