Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

So I have a problem

My internet usage is atrocious. Now that I’m capped, I actually notice how much data I use to access the interwebs. Looking at my numbers, I really ought to spend less time surfing the web, watching videos, going on facebook, skyping etc and actually use the internet for work.



Sorry ma, I love Google.

I am still going strong with staying off myspace, facebook, friendster and productivity blogs. Keeping myself away from Google and its many counterparts? Not so much. I am really losing my focus here and it’s finals week. I should probably stop messing around 43t too. It’s tough when the cheer fairy is generous. Anyway, am limiting myself to only posting the daily happiness entries.

Time to adopt the Turn-that-damn-thing-off strategy.



Social sites, awkward bites.

I’ve managed to stay off the social sites that I used to waste massive amounts of hours on like, facebook, friendster and myspace; for almost a year now! Since I get notifications on the messages from these sites sent to my email, I don’t have to log on anymore. No updates, no pictures, no time-wasting applications, no hmm-I-wonder-what-did-”insert person’s name here”-do-last-weekend-crap, no more. If it’s important enough, they’d email/text/call. It’s been working well so far and I’m glad there’s progress on this.

This goal did more than increase my working hours, it helps me to not take things in life so seriously. I just found out today that someone posted an embarrassing video of this skit we did for class on some social site. Awkward, yes; but it seems that it didn’t affect me as much as the rest who are constantly logged on. It didn’t matter to me because I feel that people don’t take those sites seriously anyway, well, they shouldn’t :) Who knew this goal could have helped me this way.

Although I have yet to reach the optimal and efficient state of net usage, I’m really glad I reached somewhere. I stopped hitting refresh; so can you! :)



Back to Square One. I'm Taking a Leap. I'm Making a Change.

I cannot believe this myself. I was doing good for the last 2 weeks or so until today. I am going to stop denying the fact that the old habit of aimlessly web surfing and online gaming has returned and I am terribly ashamed. The Escape Artist in me took over, especially today and this has been the main reason for my procrastination.

I am acutally going to make it a point: I am not to come online until I’m done with my main goal.
(With the exception of checking my seating plans and horoscope-might be ocd)
I’ve been pretty good at staying off and being inactive in friendster, myspace and facebook. Now, I need to get off those web games, youtube, productivity blogs and sadly, 43things till I am done. I cannot afford to allow this to be in the way of what I want to achieve in life.



Ring ring, Improvement is on the line.

I have definitely improved. Instead of channeling the excess energy I have to games like solataire, I read a page of a book or leave the laptop to do something else while waiting for it to load. Also, I am on this cycle where I have the battery charged instead of plugging it in to a powerpoint, so that the next time I use it, I can only use till the battery runs out. This means I have lesser time on the laptop in which I cannot do much with it apart from what I set out to do. I have also restricted myself to only come online twice a day. So far, this has been working well!



Minus 1-Another 'coming out' post.

This has gotten tougher for me. Especially when the pages that I wish to view are loading snail mail slow. When this happens, I have the tendency to open up another web page, usually a short game or spider solataire and start clicking away. I get carried away sometimes and this has obviously affected me negatively. I spend more than the required time needed online. This builds up and the rest is history. I guess this is curently one of my procrastination triggers. I also realised that I just need to stop fooling around in general,not just on the net. I definitely need to do something about this considering the fact that the people around me have been telling me off. Reading my last post on this, those productivity blogs are not such a bad influence after all. That’s where I’m probably going to go to get motivated and inspired again.



A few down

I’ve stopped going onto friendster, facbook and myspace for a few weeks now. However, I still have the tendency to check youtube once in awhile. Maybe I could save that for my 15 min gap that I use for breaks. Now my other new problem is getting off productivity blogs. I just can’t stop reading them. It’s about time I implement some already!
