Hit and miss

but mostly good!
A couple of the plants that were transplants – one of the yarrows and a black-eyed susan – are dying on me. So I just ordered some from the company I got the bee balm (which are doing wonderfully) from – at half price! They’re having some kind of Memorial Day sale. Just hope I have enough room for everybody!

If the weather holds tomorrow (or maybe if it doesn’t), I’m going to be out digging, weeding, and planting flowers. I am so looking forward to this!
I also ordered seeds for my butterfly weed yesterday, through an organization that specializes in purchasing from consumer supported agricultural concerns (i.e., smaller, lesser-commercial farms & individuals). The only seeds that came up for us this year were from one of these farms. I’m hoping these seeds will do the same.
Can’t wait for tomorrow!

We tried starting stuff with seeds in March, with marginal results. Only the blue flax is coming up, but it looks like it’s going to be a beautiful flower.
I ordered some bee balm that should be coming in this week, a tall, red flower. I also posted on some Freecycles this morning for yarrow, echinacea, daisies, and butterfly weed. We’ll see how that goes …

I have irises about three feet tall of a variety of colors. The black-eyed susans and evening primroses I planted on the fence border are doing great (also loving this rain). I’m hoping they just take off and go crazy.
The lasagna bed’s another goal, for another post …

though they’re so tiny it’s hard to tell what’s what yet. I’m hoping the blue flax is okay – I think it’s some of those seedlings I’m seeing. Never grown it before, and it looks beautiful.
Also looks like we’ve dodged the below-freezing temps that were scheduled (fingers crossed behind back here). There are some places where it looks like nothing’s taking. May try to plant actual perennial plants there …
Now about those neighborhood cats … :-I

Either yesterday or the day before, I found some little bitty green heads (neither crabgrass or maple trees, lol) peeping through the dirt. According to my chart they may be black-eyed susans. Now if the frost that’s projected for the next 3 or days doesn’t get ‘em, we’re off to a good start!

now waiting and watching …
When I was at my in-laws’ this weekend, my father-in-law was showing me his pink evening primrose plants, which he has in abundance. I mentioned that when he wanted to thin them out I’d like some for a skinny little crabgrass-growing strip I have, and the next thing I knew, he was out there with a shovel digging them up! So I spent that evening digging that up and getting them in the ground; that’s done!
And since I figured we had several days of rain coming this week, my daughter and I got the perennial seeds out last night in the lasagna bed I made last year. Of course it’s sunny and windy today, but the rain’s comin’.
Yay!

... and a place to plant them (though neighborhood kitties have been using it for their own plantings :-P). Next week is Spring Break, so we’ll have the time, and hopefully the weather. YAY!

I have some really hearty cherry/roma tomato plants coming up, next to some really good-looking basil. As soon as the oregano gets bigger I’ll set it out next to the ‘maters. And that little bitty strawberry plant I got from Wal-Mart is really taking off, making big, sour strawberries and settting out runners like it wants to stay for a while.
Yea!

Small steps

My re-seeded tomatoes are coming along, and the one Wally-world strawberry plant I planted has yielded its first red berry. The basil is doing great, and the chamomile and lemon balm are getting good starts.
Fun!
