Someone asked why I want to use a typewriter to write a book. For me, it’s a matter of permanence. There’s no backspace on a typewriter. When I type on computers, I have the habit of deleting everything I don’t like and editing before I’m done. Writing on a typewriter has a sense of classicism to it, but more importantly for me, it’s that the words are there and I can’t take them back right away.

I have this typewriter that I’ve been wanting to write my book on. It’s not fancy or anything, some old Sears thing I got for $5 at a garage sale. But I love it, and that’s what counts.
However, it’s broken. It needs a new ribbon and a few of the keys don’t work—notably, “r” and “m”. There’s not a lot of places that fix typewriters these days, especially not the old, non-electric ones. Sigh. This may be tricky.
Looks like at least the first half of this will happen. I decided to take fall quarter off from school next year, so hopefully that will give me a chance to write a bit. The publishing is sort of out of my hands, but we’ll see.
