see every Werner Herzog film

The library’s copy of Heart of Glass is lost but they won’t admit it. I really wish I could watch it.

Just finished watching Little Dieter Needs To Fly. Very excellent. Lists of Bests says I have watched 62% of his films.

My VCR broke, but if it hadn’t, I know I would have been able to watch at least a few more films.

Finished watching the short films La Soufriere, How Much Wood Would A Woodchuck Chuck and The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner.

I found that this really awesome movie store near school has a bunch of the older films, including Herkales. I’m going to scrape up $25 for a month’s membership and go crazy sometime.

All of the sudden, this has gotten really hard to do. I love Herzog, but some of his new stuff is nothing compared to his old. I have Wild Blue Yonder and Incident at Loch Ness waiting for me to watch them, but they’re both awful compared to Land of Silence and Darkness and Where the Green Ants Dream.

This isn’t to say all his newer stuff is bad. I loved Wheel of Time. It’s just when he tries to meld his abilities at both story-driven films and documentaries that I don’t care for.

Got Lessons of Darkness/Fata Morgana from the library. Started watching Lessons, and there’s a big crack in the disc so I haven’t watched the second half. I fell asleep while watching Fata Morgana. I checked, and the library back home in Minneapolis has it, so I’ll wait until I get back to watch it.

I did watch Where The Green Ants Dream, which was amazing. The best moralistic story line of any film I’ve ever seen.

From now on, I’m just going to edit this one entry because it’s sort of a pain to keep copying and pasting the list, and I’ll add any thoughts up here.

Just finished Wheel of Time. I had some time between my meeting and class, and it was (like every other film) phenomenal. The thing that struck me most was Takna Jigme Sangpo, the political prisoner. Amazing story. Just so good.

5/18/07, 4:56 pm. Finished Fitzcarraldo. I enjoyed it, but not as much as I had hoped. It’s Herzog’s most well known film, and it was good, but I’ve liked other things better.

Picked up Wheel of Time and Fitzcarraldo at the library today. I’m really excited for both of them. I find that I end up enjoying Herzog’s documentary work a lot more than I remember.

Watched The White Diamond this morning. Pretty good. 20% done!
