This has become habit. My sister and I go once a week. Not only to see some great films, but to spend some quality time together, have lunch, etc. It’s really fun. This weekend is going to be good, Little Miss Sunshine and The Departed, I’m very much looking forward to both.

Twice in one week, I’m on a roll! This pattern is likely to continue seeing I’m on holidays for the next week (although, I’ll be at work every other day and have some uni assignments I need to finish over the holidays) and there are so many films coming out soon that I want to see at the cinema.
Today, the long awaited Nacho Libre! My sister and I had been anticipating this day for weeks, and it lived up to our expectations. It was a step up from Napoleon Dynamite, I think, as it wasn’t just amusing moments but had an overarching narrative which kind of tied all that stuff together. But, let’s not read too much into it, it was a really, really fun movie. It had some really great lines which I think we’ll be quoting to each other for the next few days: “get that corn outta my face.”
The couple who were behind us in the line to buy tickets, asked for tickets to “that nachos movie.” Haha, and the woman serving her had no idea what she was talking about until some other guy stepped in. They were in the same theatre as us, but I didn’t hear them laughing at all.
NEXT WEEK:
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby: After watching Anchorman for the first time last night, I am so pumped for this.
Taking advantage of the fact that it was cheap Tuesday and I was in the city (none of the local cinemas are showing it) I went and saw this today. I thought it worked as a satire on “spin culture” and all, but I also liked the relationship between Nick and his son, which really kept the film from being just satire.
One thing, as the opening credits were rolling and Robert Duvall’s name came up, some girl in the audience said “Who’s that?!” HEATHENS!
Trailers:
Little Miss Sunshine: I’m really looking forward to seeing this, but I’m a bit wary about all the hype, I mean it jumped into the IMDB top 250 in its first week of release (though really that says more about the IMDB system than the film itself). The trailer looked good, had a few laugh out loud moments, so yeah, still looking forward to it.
An Inconvenient Truth: Hm, looks interesting but I think I might wait until it comes out on DVD, there’s already too much I want to see at the cinemas in the next couple of weeks.
AND! Only three more sleeps till my sister and I go and see Nacho Libre!
Scanning the film pages in the newspaper, there’s nothing on this week that I want to see, nothing in the cinemas close to home anyway. So, this week, I’m passing on going to the cinema this week, but I don’t feel guilty about it.
But next week: NACHO LIBRE which my sister and I are very, very excited about!
Clerks 2. Well, Clerks is one of my favourite films y’know, and probably even more so now that I’m working in a video store, haha. I rewatched Clerks last night to get into the mood for going to the cinema to see the sequel today.
All I can say is “YESSSSS!” It’s funny, outrageous, life-affirming and sentimental without being too sappy. I can’t believe I actually cried, but eh. Definitely a must see for Kevin Smith fans, and I know there’s plenty of them. I don’t want to make grand statements like “a return to form” or something wanky like that, but it’s a major step up from Jersey Girl.
Plus it brought back so many memories (good ones!) with the Smashing Pumpkins on the soundtrack. Man, they were the soundtrack of my teenage years. I should start listening to them again.
Snakes on a Plane. This was, if you don’t mind me saying, FUCKING AWESOME. My already very high expectations were exceeded! It was funny and scary and great fun. Although, my theatre was pretty much empty which kind of sucked. I think I might try and go to a late night screening some time anyway, just to get the whole experience.
Am I the only one who sat with their legs up on the seat in front the whole film? Seriously, I didn’t expect this film to actually play so much on those kinds of fears but it did. Wow.
I really want to go and see it again. I haven’t had this much fun in a theatre for a long long time.
I’ve totally been keeping up with this goal, except for one week where I was horribly ill on my usual cinema-day and had to cancel all my plans (I’d already bought the tickets and everything, damn!) I also saw Brick last week which I absolutely loved. The noir/teen film genre cross over worked more perfectly than I ever could have imagined. One I’ll definitely have to watch again.
And tomorrow, well, tomorrow is the day I go and see SNAKES ON A PLANE!!! Words cannot describe how excited I am!
So, I clearly got too busy to visit the cinema for about a month. Where “busy” really means “lazy”. But yesterday, after class and hanging out with some good friends I decided to go and see The Lake House as I am a big fan of Keanu Reeves, I think he’s great.
I kind of struggled with the premise of the film – the whole two years apart deal – before I was actually in the theatre, but I think watching the film made it a bit clearer. I mean, it never really explained why this strange time warp was happening, but did it really matter? Not to me, I really enjoyed this film.
As mentioned in my last entry, I went and saw The Chumscrubber with my sister today. I loved it! It was dark, it was beautiful, it was funny, it was touching, blah blah blah. I really enjoyed it. It’s actually a pretty relevant film for my thesis, but I wasn’t really paying close ‘critical’ attention to it. Definitely one I’ll be adding to my DVD collection when it gets a release.
I went along and saw Over the Hedge this evening with a girl from work. It was really great, very funny and the animation was pretty amazing. William Shatner was awesome! The people sat behind us were really getting into it, this one woman was howling with laughter and then her boyfriend, ten seconds later would repeat the line that had made her laugh so much and she’d be off howling again. Normally this would ruin the cinema experience, but this time it was amusing.
And tomorrow, it’s off to the cinema again, this time to see The Chumscrubber which I’ve been looking forward to seeing for a couple of weeks now.
